2024 International Roadcheck, May 14-16

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) plays a crucial role in promoting safety and compliance within the commercial transportation industry. One of its most significant annual events, the International Roadcheck, is rapidly approaching.

Beginning May 14, the three-day event’s objective is to improve road safety by conducting thorough Inspections of Commercial Vehicles (CMV) and their drivers. During this period, Commercial Motor Vehicle Inspectors in the United States, Canada, and Mexico will perform Inspections at weigh stations, roadside check-points, and other locations. These Inspections help identify and address potential safety issues before they lead to accidents or breakdowns on the road.

Over the three days of International Roadcheck, inspectors will conduct their routine North American Standard Level I Inspection, which is a thorough 37-step Inspection procedure consisting of the examination of vehicle components, driver documentation and requirements.

In preparation for the CVSA's International Roadcheck, Aim will be hosting a DOT Inspection Refresher webinar on Tuesday, April 23, at 2:00 PM (EDT). Make sure you register for this great opportunity to hear from expert John Rugarber, Aim Regional Safety Manager, who will cover what you need to know to ace your next inspection. Following the webinar, all registrants will receive a DOT Inspection Report you can use as a checklist to help ensure your trucks are ready to pass an inspection as well as a CVSA Inspection Bulletin detailing one of the focus areas of this year's International Roadcheck.

The Inspection will cover various aspects of Commercial Vehicles and drivers. Inspectors will examine the vehicle's brake systems, cargo-securement, lighting, tires, and other critical components to ensure they meet safety standards. They will also review driver qualifications, including licenses, medical certificates, and Hours-of-Service records, to ensure compliance with regulations.

For each International Roadcheck, the CVSA chooses a focus area, calling extra attention to important aspects of driver and vehicle safety. This year’s focus areas will be Tractor Protection Systems and Alcohol and Controlled Substance possessions. Inspectors will pay extra attention to these areas during an Inspection.

Possession and use of Controlled Substances and alcohol continue to be major concerns for Motor Carriers, drivers and the public. The count of banned drivers recorded in the U.S. Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse (DACH) is on the rise, presenting a dangerous trend that jeopardizes the safety of all travelers on North American roads.

The upcoming International Roadcheck serves as a timely reminder for Motor Carriers to implement and enforce strict policies prohibiting the possession or use of Controlled Substances and Alcohol in the workplace. It is crucial for U.S. Motor Carriers to regularly check the DACH to verify that their drivers are not in a prohibited status. Commercial Motor Vehicle drivers must adhere to their company's policies and abstain from possessing, using or being under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances while on duty. Inspectors are urged to remain vigilant in detecting and addressing such violations during all inspections.

Furthermore, the International Roadcheck aims to raise awareness among drivers, Motor Carriers, technicians, and Enforcement personnel about Tractor Protection Systems. These systems include the Tractor Protection Valve, Trailer Supply Valve and Anti-bleed Back Valve, which are crucial components often overlooked during Pre- trip and Roadside Inspections.
